March 24, 2015 by Licia Clark 1 Comment

Introducing the first-ever Inspire-1 Video Contest open to our students!

inspire1VideoContest3

We want to see who can create the best video answering the following question: How has creative arts made your life more beautiful?

In order to win the contest we have put into effect some important guidelines that each video and contest entrant must follow:

  1. 90 seconds or less: each video submitted must be 90 seconds or less. This might not seem like a lot of time, but trust us when we say that it’s more than enough time to answer our question in a clear, creative way.
  2. The video must mention Inspire-1: Be creative if you wish, but your video must mention Inspire-1. Surprise us and make it fun!
  3. Video must be submitted by email to [email protected]: In order for us to judge your video in the most effective effort, we’re asking that you submit your video by email to [email protected] You can submit your video by attachment, YouTube link, Vimeo link or Facebook link. For parents who don’t wish to have their kids’ video on social media sites, please let us know and have your child’s video submitted as an email attachment. We want to respect the privacy of all of our students.

We have some pretty incredible prizes to be given away that will be announced as the competition reaches its final stages. Prizes will be awarded according to age groups: 5-8 years old, 9-12 years old, and 13+ years old. We want everyone to have a fair chance at winning.

Now, don’t forget: deadline to enter our video contest is April 16th.

Peace Officer Memorial Audition

I received a call this week from Detective Jim Olson, President of the Fresno County Peace Officers Memorial Foundation. He is inviting the Choirs to participate at this years memorial for our 14th year in a row. It will be held at Courthouse Park on May 7th from 11:30am – 1pm.
The first year Detective Jim Olson and Detective Mike Harris had asked us to sing the National Anthem and “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” for the ceremony but they wanted to come by during a rehearsal to hear us before committing to having us. That semester we were also working on the Brooklyn Tabernacle song “My Life is In Your Hands” which was born out of the 9/11 tragedy the year before-

“You don’t have to worry and don’t you be afraid.
Joy comes in the morning. Troubles they don’t last always.
For there’s a friend in Jesus who will wipe your tears away
And if your heart is broken Just lift your hands and say
I know that I can make it. I know that I can stand
No matter what may come my way
My life is in your hands” – Kirk Franklin

We sang the requested songs with gusto and were approved for the event but I asked if we could sing “My Life is In Your Hands” for them even though we all knew it was politically incorrect because of the name of “Jesus”. The kids sang it from their hearts and our guests were stoic but moved. They spoke among themselves and asked if we could make “My Life is In Your Hands” and medley with “The Battle Hymn”. “Of course!” was our response.
Before the detectives (clad in guns and holsters) left us that day – I asked some of the kids to come up to the front and pray for them.
It was the day that God put together Home Schoolers and Homicide Detectives and every year since, representatives come to hear us sing a couple of weeks before the event. Each year the students pray for them.
After the detectives left our class that first year – I was told that Detective Olson told Detective Harris that he had to hum the “Marine’s Hymn” to himself throughout the performance to hold it together. He has since told me that the only time he cries is when he hears the kids sing (but don’t tell anyone). He’ll be back in a couple of weeks for more and we’ll be ready.

Yours truly,

Licia Clark

Kum-ba-yah: A Recital

March 6, 2015 by Licia Clark Leave a Comment

Screen Shot 2015-03-06 at 1.31.38 PMInspire One is having a recital tonight in the Worship Ministries Building at Peoples Church at 7 pm and the first piece will be  “Kum-ba-yah”  performed by Kaitlyn. Caught up in curiosity – I’ve delved into the history of where this song came from, and ended up at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress.

Is it an African song? Is it the work of Marvin Frey, an evangelist in the 1930’s? Is it from the Gullah-Geechee people from coastal Georgia and South Carolina? The earliest recording of it is a cylinder recording done by H. Wylie in 1926, and the words go like this:

“Somebody need you, Lord, come by here; Somebody need you, Lord, come by here; Somebody need you, Lord, come by here – Oh, Lord, come by here.”

Wherever it’s origin – the truth remains the same and people all over the world still know the tune. Tonight it’s not just the first piece of the recital but the prayer of our hearts.

I’m excited,

Licia

PSCA is now Inspire One

February 24, 2015 by Licia Clark Leave a Comment

The vision of the Peoples School of Creative Arts has grown into Inspire One – a new non-profit – where our heart is to educate children in the creative arts while building cross-cultural and socio-economic bridges.

What started as an opportunity to teach a choir of 24 home schooled children has burgeoned into multiple choirs and a core of quality instructors in various creative arts genres..

Licia Clark came to Peoples Church 14 years ago with a small home school choir ministry seeking a place to call home. Since that time she has faithfully served, impacting thousands of students their families and now even multiple generations. As the ministry continues to grow it has become evident that it is now time for Licia to stand and walk on her own.

We are proud to announce that the ministries under PSCA will now be taken over by Inspire-1.org a brand new nonprofit started and led by, you guessed it, our own Licia Clark. We are pleased to be working together over the next several months to make this transition as smooth as possible for all involved.

Licia and all PSCA activities will continue at Peoples Church through the scheduled spring session. Inspire-1 will use this time to seek God and prepare for the upcoming transition. A major  task for Inspire-1 is finding a suitable new home to house existing activities and room to expand for expected growth that happens each and every year. Plus the many new opportunities Licia is planning for the ever expanding ministries in music, dance and creative arts.

Inspire One will of course continue the work in the Biola community and just recently even received a donation of use of large property to expand the activities in Biola for the kingdom of God. Please pray for God’s blessings as we enter this season of change and development. Our hope is to see Licia and Inspire One go on to experience great kingdom impact and continue to be our ministry allies in this valley we call home. Whether you’re interested in the joy of dance, sign up to sing, pound on percussion,  improve your ability on an instrument,  or want to be involved in Inspire One’s movement to build bridges in Biola and beyond… here’s the place to start.

The Bottom Line is that we need your help to find the best possible new home to house the ministries of Inspire One. Please pray share and donate, we are counting on You.
